The Importance of Fasting & Cleansing

 

We know that for many people, the standard diet advice simply does not work. For years we have been told eat lower fat, consume fewer calories, and exercise more, yet the obesity rates in North America continue to rise. The process of fasting & cleansing is a radical alternative.  It has the potential to change the way we think about eating and weight loss. Fasting demands that we think about not just what we eat, but when we eat it.

 

Why fasting works: It is simple

  • There are no complicated rules, it’s flexible and easy to follow
  • There’s no need to log calories or serial deprivation
  • Weight loss is only one benefit of fasting. The real dividend is the potential for long-term health gains.
  • It is a sustainable strategy for long-term health.

 

The Science of Fasting:

Periods of feast or famine used to be the norm.  Eating 5-6 small meals a day is a new concept in our history of evolution. Our remote ancestors would go for long periods of time without having anything to eat. These days’ things are very different. We eat all the time, including many snacks, and the idea of fasting is seen as a rather radical, not to mention, unhealthy thing to do.

 

Won’t skipping meals lower your metabolism?

One reason people eat frequently thought-out the day is that they believe it will increase their metabolic rate and help them lose weight.  This, unfortunately, is false.

In a recent study, researchers at the Institute for Clinical and Experimental Medicine in Prague evaluated two groups of type 2 diabetes. Both groups consumed the same number of calories but group 1 ate twice a day whereas group 2 ate 5-6 mini meals.  Despite eating the exact same number of calories, group 1 lost an average of 3 lbs more and 1.5 inches (1). Als, the 5-6 mini meal group felt less satiated and found it harder to stick to the nutrition plan (1).

 

By eating multiple meals a day your body is constantly spiking its insulin levels. This may predispose individuals to insulin resistance, especially if consuming meals high in carbohydrates. Insulin is also a storage hormone making fat loss more difficult!

 

Things I have learnt from fasting:

  1. From my initial fasting experiment, I discovered I often was eating when I was truly not hungry. I realized I ate because I was conditioned to eat at a certain time, or I was actually thirsty, or there was an emotional need that wasn’t feeling fulfilled.
  2. I discovered that hunger passes. During my fast I felt more energy and focus than ever before.
  3. I feared that fasting would be hard to do, but I released it truly isn’t!

 

How to ease into fasting: JUICING
